Cast: Zsofia Psotta, Luke & Body, Sandor Zsoter

Cert: 15

Running time: 119mins

Year: 2014

The lowdown: Globalisation’s corrosive effects are mauled in this allegorical shaggy dog story. A young girl adopts a street mutt much to the chagrin of her dad and everyone else around her. When they are separated said pooch embarks on an odyssey through the strata of Hungarian society, before turning the tables on those further up the ladder. Director Mundruczo has delivered a hard-edged gem that gives paws for thought.

The full verdict: White God’s charismatic canine, Hagen, is not just a dog. He’s a metaphor for an underclass that can only be pushed so far. He’s the pubescent id of teenage owner Lili (Psotta)...

The lowdown: A superhero movie based on a Marvel comic book almost as obscure to filmgoers as Guardians of the Galaxy works a second time around in this sci-fi family adventure. When tragedy strikes teenager Hiro, his big brother’s robotic “health care companion” Baymax is there to help him pick up the pieces. But, a mysterious masked man begins terrorising the city San Fransokyo, meaning Hiro, Baymax and their goofy robotic engineering pals must suit up to protect the city...

American Sniper

American-Sniper---posterDirector: Clint Eastwood

Cast: Bradley Cooper, Sienna Miller, Sammy Sheik, Mido Hamada

Cert: 15

Running time: 132mins

Year: 2014

The lowdown: 21 years after Unforgiven, Clint Eastwood again dives deep into the psychological impact of killing with this nerve-fraying war movie. Bradley Cooper is Chris Kyle, the US Navy SEAL with 160 confirmed kills, making him the most lethal sniper in US history. The cumulative effect of four tours of Iraq on the man dubbed “The Legend” by his fellow soldiers on both Kyle and his family is impressively realised through brutal combat scenes and stand-out performances from Cooper and Sienna Miller as Kyle’s wife.

Cast: James Corden, Emily Blunt, Anna Kendrick, Meryl Streep, Chris Pine, Tracey Ullman, Daniel Huttlestone, Johnny Depp, Mackenzie Mauzy, Lilla Crawford

Cert: PG

Running time: 125mins

Year: 2014

The lowdown: Stephen Sondheim’s 1986 fairytale mash-up musical comes to the big screen courtesy of the Mouse House. Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Red Riding Hood converge in the woods along with a baker and his wife, on a quest to break a witch’s curse and have a child. A high wattage cast dive into the meta-panto spirit and it’s all gorgeously mounted, though younger audience members may flag before the finish line.

The Last of the Unjust

The-Last-of-the-Unjust---Claude-Lanzmann,-posterDirector: Claude Lanzmann

Writer: Claude Lanzmann

Cast: Benjamin Murmelstein, Claude Lanzmann

Cert: 12

Running time: 218mins

Year: 2013

The lowdown: Monumental account of the wartime experiences of Benjamin Murmelstein, the only “Jewish Elder” to have survived the Holocaust. That Murmelstein was the final “Elder”, ie forced camp administrator, of the infamous Theresienstadt “model ghetto” made him work dangerously close to Adolf Eichmann, one of the Holocaust’s chief architects. Moreover, it saw him vilified by fellows Jews after the war as a collaborator. Claude Lanzmann’s demanding and rewarding documentary of a fascinating individual is a must-watch event.

The Interview (2014)

The-Interview---James-Franco,-Seth-Rogen,-posterDirector: Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg

Writer: Dan Sterling

Cast: James Franco, Seth Rogen, Randall Park, Lizzy Caplan, Diana Bang

Cert: 15

Running time: 112mins

Year: 2014

The lowdown: So, The Interview… Aka the most dangerous film of all-time or the movie with history’s best marketing campaign. The bottom line is, it is exactly what you’d expect from the This Is The End team – dumb, offensive, funny, scrappy and likeable. But it’s probably the spectacle of Kim Jong-un blubbing over Katy Perry as much comments about famine and concentration camps that got North Korea aiming its cyber-sights on Sony’s servers.
