The Drop

The Drop posterDirector: Michael R. Roskam

Writer: Dennis Lehane

Cast: Tom Hardy, James Gandolfini, Noomi Rapace, Matthias Schoenaerts, John Ortiz

Cert: 15

Running time: 106mins

Year: 2014

The lowdown: Destined to be remembered as James Gandolfini’s final screen appearance, this crime drama does his talents justice. Tom Hardy takes centre stage playing a good-natured, soulful bartender at Gandolfini’s New York bar. When stick-up men jack a $5,000 drop at the bar intended for Chechen mobsters the two must retrieve it before they experience disappointment Eastern European gangland style. Solid crime thrills from the writer of Gone Baby Gone and Shutter Island.

The Art of the Steal

The Art of the Steal poster - Kurt RussellDirector: Jonathan Sobol

Writer: Jonathan Sobol

Cast: Kurt Russell, Matt Dillon, Jay Baruchel, Terence Stamp, Kenneth Welsh, Katheryn Winnick

Cert: 15

Running time: 90mins

Year: 2013

The lowdown: Modest, agreeable crime caper with the evergreen Kurt Russell as the wheelman in a crew of art thieves and conmen led up by half-brother Matt Dillon. Years after a betrayal sees Russell doing hard jail time, Dillon returns, with one last job that will put them all on easy street. But, can he be trusted? Environmentally conscious in the way it recycles plot and characters from The Sting, Jackie Brown, and even 21, the steal is still done with no small amount of artistry. Even if the title itself is nicked from the name of Catch Me If You Can inspiration Frank Abagnale’s autobiography.

Year: 2013

The lowdown: Pretty posh lad Jude Law slaps on sideburns, piles on the pounds and dusts off his best Del-boy impression to play the eponymous safecracker, recently released and looking for compensation after a twelve year stretch. A somnambulant Richard E. Grant is on hand as Dom’s long-suffering sidekick. Writer/Director Richard Shepard (The Matador) tries to give his crude creation an original voice but the result is more bellowing bore than Sexy Beast.

The full verdict: The indulgent tone for this brash Brit-flick is set from the start with an imprisoned Dom (Law) delivering a lengthy, Steven Berkoff-style paean to h...

Passion (2012)

Passion-Poster1Director: Brian De Palma

Cast: Rachel McAdams, Noomi Rapace, Paul Anderson, Karoline Herfurth

Cert: 15

Running time: 105 mins

Year: 2012

The lowdown: Brian De Palma is a long way from his glory days with this latest clunker.  Attempting to recapture the dark eroticism of Dressed to Kill, he ends up floundering in a sea of Body Doubles and Femme Fatales.  Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace are warring advertising colleagues locked in a deadly psychosexual game of cat-and-mouse, but the only thrills to be had are from the unintentional chuckles.  A rush remake of the French film Crime d’Amour starring Kristin Scott-Thomas and Ludivine Sagnier, this is not De Palma’s worst (that’s still Mission To Mars) but the director has truly lost his (Carlito’s) way.

Stand Up Guys

stand-up-guys02Director: Fisher Stevens

Cast: Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, Alan Arkin, Julianna Margulies, Mark Margolis, Addison Timlin, Vanessa Ferlito, Lucy Punch

Cert: 15

Running time: 96 mins

Year: 2012

The lowdown: Enjoyable crime comedy-drama with the extra hook of seeing three Hollywood OAP all-stars riffing on their personas.  Pacino is a career criminal, out of the big house after a 28-year stretch and looking for a night of partying with his one-time partner Walken.  Problem is Walken’s been ordered to kill his buddy-in-crime or he’s for the dirt-nap.  Arkin adds crotchety fun as their one-time wheel-man, while Julianna Margulies is back in the ER as his nurse daughter.  Disposable, but fun thanks to the three game leads.
