Gareth Evans Talks The Raid 2: Berandal

Gareth Evans reveals secrets of The Raid 2: Berandal!

In August this year I had the good fortune of interviewing soon-to-be-white-hot director and all round good bloke Gareth Evans.

I was primarily there to talk about the terrifying segment of V/H/S/2 that he and co-director Timo Tjahjanto were responsible for. But, I couldn’t let the interview go without taking the opportunity to ask him about what we can expect from The Raid 2: Berandal.

Mr. Evans graciously revealed teasers of what we can expect and, to my, joy also confirmed the sequel does feature a car chase!  Something I’d hoped for when writing my review of the original movie.

If like me, waiting for The Raid 2 is like a kid waiting for their first Christmas, then read on and prepare to get rather excited.

The Call (2013)

The Call - quad poster - Halle BerryDirector: Brad Anderson

Cast: Halle Berry, Abigail Breslin, Michael Eklund, Morris Chestnut, Michael Imperioli

Runtime: 95 minutes

Cert: 15

Year: 2013

medium_2

The lowdown: It’s high concept hell for Halle Berry and Abigail Breslin who deserve better than this formulaic 90’s throwback that should be cut off long before its demented denouement.

The Call - Abigail Breslin, Michael EklundThe Call - Halle Berry

The Verdict: The Call begins with 911 operator Jordan (Berry) leaving her job after a fatal lapse in judgement. Six months on, still traumatised, she’s training new recruits on how to handle the pressures of work. When an inexperienced operator receives a call from Casey (Breslin), an abducted teenage girl imprisoned in the trunk of a car, Jordan reluctantly takes over and has a chance to save Casey and redeem herself.

Blue Jasmine

Running time: 98mins

Cert: 12

Year: 2013

The lowdown: Cate Blanchett will surely be clutching a golden statue come March 2014’s Oscars for her astonishing performance in this sensational Woody Allen drama. As Jasmine, a pampered Manhattan socialite brought to Earth with a stony broke bump, she commands the attention with a turn of incredible complexity.  Alec Baldwin, Sally Hawkins and even Andrew Dice Clay also impress in this ambitious examination of the haves and have-nots, corporate greed and the lies we tell ourselves.

Diana

Cast: Naomi Watts, Naveen Andrews, Juliet Stevenson, Geraldine James

Cert: 12

Running time:113 mins

Year: 2013

medium_1

The lowdown: The most misjudged celebrity biopic since Mommie Dearest or Caligula, Diana is bewilderingly bad. Clearly aiming to be cast in the same mould as The Iron Lady and The Queen, this account of Lady Di’s final two years and relationship with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan is sunk by tin-ear dialogue, a script part Mills & Boon, part Hello! and drab movie-of-the-week type visuals. No one survives with any credibility in a movie that’s less Queen of Hearts, more fart in a spacesuit.

Running time: 89mins

Year: 2013

The lowdown: Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit and Bridget Jones sequel director Beebon Kidron turns her viewfinder toward the Internet’s effect on young people. But, the Web is a big place and Kidron’s attempt to squeeze everything into 89 minutes leaves this documentary rather less than 3G.  Plus, there is the grumbling sense the director has never used Facebook or Twitter or the other elements of the Web of which she seems very suspicious.

Rush (2013)

Rush - quad poster, Hemsworth, Bruhl, HowardDirector: Ron Howard

Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Bruhl, Olivia Wilde, Alexandra Maria Lara

Cert: 15

Running time: 123mins

Year: 2013

The lowdown: Ron Howard shifts into high gear for a riveting retelling of James Hunt and Niki Lauda’s fierce rivalry on and off the 1970s Formula 1 track. Boasting pole position performances from Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl as Hunt and Lauda, two very different men with different approaches to racing, it stands as a strong contender for Howard’s best work to date. A great movie even for those not interested in F1 (or perhaps especially so), the race for Oscar starts here.

The Assassins (2012)

The Assassins - DVD coverDirector: Zhao Lin Shan

Cast: Chow Yun-Fat, Liu Yi-Fei, Qui Xin-shi Alec Su, Hiroshi Tamaki

Cert: 15

Running time: 103mins

Year: 2012

The lowdown: Lavishly presented historical epic in the Curse of the Golden Flower tradition, charting the dying moments of the Han Dynasty which spanned 200 BC – 200 AD. Chow Yun-Fat is Chancellor Cao Cao, a warlord who has vanquished enemies threatening Alec Su’s foppish Emperor Xian. But, power plays in the Emperor’s court plus assassins targeting Cao Cao for death continue to threaten the nation’s peace. Low-key despite sumptuous visuals and beautiful costumes, this is still compelling historical drama.

The Great Hip Hop Hoax

The Great Hip Hop Hoax posterDirector: Jeanie Finlay

Cast: Billy Boyd, Gavin Bain

Cert: 18

Running time: 88mins

Year: 2013

The lowdown: In 2004 Californian hip-hop homeboys Silibil n’ Brains were destined for stardom. They were the real deal. The genuine article. They were also two students from Dundee who had no idea how far they’d have to go to hide their true identities.

The Great Hip Hop Hoax - Boyd, Bain, lagerThe Great Hip Hop Hoax - Boyd, Bain, car

The verdict: Labelled “the rapping Proclaimers” at a disastrous A&R audition, Scottish rap fans Billy Boyd and Gavin Bain re-invented themselves as West-Coast wild boys Silibil n’ Brains.

Their commitment to the lie would shame most method actors and at a time when social media was still in its infancy, they used their MTV inspired accents and jackass-style antics to fool industry execs into thinking they’d struck gold.

Sharknado

Sharknado posterDirector: Anthony C. Ferrante

Cert: 15

Running time: 86mins

Year: 2013

medium_2

The lowdown: The “stick a shark in it” bad movie series reaches a fin-de-siècle with Sharknado.  Everything is present and correct; ropey FX, set-pieces unmatched by budget and stars wondering how they ever got here.  Interesting if only to see how far naff effects have come since Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus, but let’s call time on these Carcharodon Car-Carry-Ons.

Sharknado - hammerhead attackSharknado - Tara Reid mouth open

The full verdict: How fun can a bad movie be when the filmmakers are in on the joke?

Sharknado cost a reported $1m, but the good folk at The Asylum seem intent on making it look a tenth that amount.

The budget evidently did not stretch to a light meter, the film murkily lurching from shot-t...
