What’s the verdict: Save for a single use of a mobile phone and a lone utterance of the word “skank”, The Love Witch could be mistaken for long-lost, recently discovered 70s classic.

Anna Biller may only have one previous film (2007’s Viva) and a handful of shorts to her name, but the woman knows cinema...

All Cheerleaders Die

All Cheerleaders Die - Caitlin Stasey, Lucky McKee, Chris SiverstonDirector: Lucky McKee, Chris Siverston

Writer: Lucky McKee, Chris Siverston

Cast: Caitlin Stasey, Sianoa Smit-McPhee, Brooke Butler, Tom Williamson

Cert: 18 (TBC)

Running time: 89mins

Year: 2013

The lowdown: Lucky McKee and Chris Siverston dust off their 2001 short and give it a feature length, mid-budget makeover. Peer pressure, high school sex wars and witchcraft are the ingredients in this spicy brew as a gang of cheerleaders go from pretty vacant to pretty dead. And seriously angry. Sharp, inventive and with an edge familiar to fans of the directors previous movies, these are the most winning cheerleaders since Buffy hung up her uniform.

The full verdict: Typically the annoying ditz whose death receives the biggest laugh in standard slasher fare, cheerleaders move centre stage in...

Gemma Atkinson & Holly Goss On The Dyatlov Pass Incident

Dyatlov Pass - Goss, Atkinson

Not many of us would shoot a film in the Russian mountains. Particularly when learning the director is Renny Harlin, the Finnish daredevil director behind such “that looked tough to make” action epics as Cliffhanger and Deep Blue Sea.

But, British actresses Gemma Atkinson and Holly Goss like a challenge and can be seen in Harlin’s “Blair Witch on ice” horror The Dyatlov Pass Incident.

Based around a real life incident in which a group of experience skiers perished in the Ural mountains in unexplained circumstances, Harlin’s movie is gloriously bonkers, with added viscera by virtue of shooting in Russian mountains on the Arctic Circle.

Rob Daniel caught up with Atkinson and Goss to talk about an experience a million miles away from their previous work on Casualty and Holby City...

The Dyatlov Pass Incident

Dyatlov Pass Incident - quad posterDirector: Renny Harlin

Cast: Holly Goss, Matt Stokoe, Gemma Atkinson, Richard Reid, Luke Albright

Cert: 15

Running time: 100mins

Year: 2013

The lowdown: The Blair Witch Project gets a middle budget makeover in Renny Harlin’s fun horror adventure.  A group of college kids investigate a real-life mystery from 1959 about the violent, unexplained death of skiers in the Ural mountains. Mixing ghost story unease with bizarre plot twists, this is surely the most bonkers explanation of what may have occurred and knows not to take itself seriously.  A largely British cast works well with the elements and American accents, while Die Hard 2 director Harlin again proves he should be trusted with bigger budgets.
