2017 – A Hot Summer for Movies?

Summer movies. They promise so much, yet so many times deliver so little. Terminator: Genisys, Jason Bourne, Suicide Squad anyone?

But, eternal optimist Rich Phippen takes an idiosyncratic, partially cautious look at films coming up over the summer period that may very well buck the trend and become warm weather hits.

MAY

Colossal (release: 19th May)

If you want to put your money on the sleeper hit of 2017, look no further than this monster movie with a twist. But when she gets there, and turns on the TV, she discovers a giant monster is wrecking Seoul in South Korea...

2014 – Rewind and Re-View

With 2015 fast becoming a reality, what better time to look back at movies in the year that was 2014?

As is tradition, let’s begin with…

WORST FILM OF THE YEAR – TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION
Transformers - Age of Extinction - Dinobot, Optimus Prime

Having sex and accidentally crying out your mum’s name. Going for a bowel movement only to look down and see blood. Jelly wrestling Eamonn Holmes. The only thing worse than these is watching all 165 minutes of the fourth instalment of the over-heated, overlong, mean-spirited toy advert franchise. It cost $210m and no-one could transform the idea into a decent script?

Foxcatcher

Foxcatcher posterDirector: Bennett Miller

Writer: E. Max Frye, Dan Futterman

Cast: Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo, Vanessa Redgrave, Sienna Miller

Cert: 15

Running time: 130mins

Year: 2014

The lowdown: Intense account of Olympic wrestlers Mark and Dave Schultz and their relationship with bizarre multimillionaire John Du Pont. Ambition, paranoia, delusion and control are Du Pont’s driving impulses and his vast wealth and skewed perception of human interaction set the stage for a particularly dark tale, captured with a clinical eye by Capote director Bennett Miller. Likely to be too remote for some, but the performances by Tatum and Ruffalo as the brothers and Carell as the unsettling Du Pont are faultless.

The full verdict: With pun fully intended, Foxcatcher is a movie to wrestle with.

Cast: Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Ice Cube, Wyatt Russell, Amber Stevens, Rob Riggle, Nick Offerman

Cert: 15

Running time: 112mins

Year: 2014

The lowdown: Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill return as Jenko and Schmidt, graduating to college after successfully busting high school back in 21 Jump Street. That film was 2012’s biggest surprise, so we’re happy to report the sequel earns 1st Class Honours in dumb, undisciplined, but smart n’ savvy, rude n’ lewd hilarity. It’s proudly the same as before, but with added bromance, soul-searching, frat houses and football. And a bigger budget. Go on… get arrested by the laugh-riot police.
