The Interview (2014)

The-Interview---James-Franco,-Seth-Rogen,-posterDirector: Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg

Writer: Dan Sterling

Cast: James Franco, Seth Rogen, Randall Park, Lizzy Caplan, Diana Bang

Cert: 15

Running time: 112mins

Year: 2014

The lowdown: So, The Interview… Aka the most dangerous film of all-time or the movie with history’s best marketing campaign. The bottom line is, it is exactly what you’d expect from the This Is The End team – dumb, offensive, funny, scrappy and likeable. But it’s probably the spectacle of Kim Jong-un blubbing over Katy Perry as much comments about famine and concentration camps that got North Korea aiming its cyber-sights on Sony’s servers.

The lowdown: John Michael McDonagh and Brendan Gleeson follow acerbic off-kilter thriller The Guard with an even darker look at contemporary Ireland. Gleeson is Father James, targeted for murder by one of his parishioners who suffered years of sexual abuse from a now dead priest. Ferociously good writing and performances, topical barbs, a large dose of James Joyce and leavening Father Ted-style irreverence make Calvary a powerful, compassionate and unforgettable film.

Last Vegas

kinopoisk.ruDirector: Jon Turteltaub

Writer: Dan Fogelman

Cast: Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Kline, Mary Steenburgen

Cert: 12

Running time: 105mins

Year: 2012

The lowdown: Imagine you live in a perfect world where the Hangover sequels don’t exist. Last Vegas would be an amusing belated follow-up, without the pain of Zach Galifianakis’ ego-fuelled manchilding. Messrs. Douglas, De Niro, Freeman and Kline are the four lifelong friends off to LV for one last MIA weekend. The gags don’t creak too audibly, aided by the chemistry fizzing off the four leads. Double down and take a chance on this likeable chuckler.

But, in these belt-tightening times, it’s also a good ni...

Boomerang Family Cast and Director Interview

Boomerang Family - poster, Park Hae-il, Yun Je-munThe 2013 London Korean Film Festival boasted a broad range of movies old and new, but in time honoured tradition arguably saved the best for last.

Boomerang Family closed the London stage of the festival, before a select number of movies then tour the country. And a fine choice to showcase how exciting the country’s cinema can be.

Revolving around a sixty-something woman and her dysfunctional brood, Boomerang Family is a family drama, slapstick comedy and crime thriller in one deliciously spicy package.

We caught up with movie’s writer and director Song Hae-sung and stars Yoon Yeo-jeong and Yun Je-mun, who play the mother and one of her son’s respectively, to talk about the film.

Electric Shadows: Could you give me one word to describe Boomerang Family?

Song Hae-sung: Boomerang Fam...

Prince Avalanche

Prince Avalanche - Paul Rudd, Emile Hirsch, quad posterDirector: David Gordon Green

Cast: Paul Rudd, Emile Hirsch

Cert: 15

Running time: 94mins

Year: 2013

The lowdown: Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch renew their ultra-indie credentials with David Gordon Green’s sweet, rambling charmer. Based on the 2011 Icelandic film Either Way, Rudd and Hirsch play two listless guys repainting roadside yellow lines following a California forest fire. Not one for those wanting fast-paced excitement, but breezily pleasant with enough depth to make it worthwhile.

The lowdown: Cate Blanchett will surely be clutching a golden statue come March 2014’s Oscars for her astonishing performance in this sensational Woody Allen drama. As Jasmine, a pampered Manhattan socialite brought to Earth with a stony broke bump, she commands the attention with a turn of incredible complexity.  Alec Baldwin, Sally Hawkins and even Andrew Dice Clay also impress in this ambitious examination of the haves and have-nots, corporate greed and the lies we tell ourselves.
