Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa

Alan Partridge Alpha Papa - quad posterDirector: Declan Lowney

Cast: Steve Coogan, Colm Meaney, Felicity Montague, Tim Key, Phil Cornwell, Nigel Lindsay, Monica Dolan

Cert: 15

Running time: 105 mins

Year: 2013

The lowdown: The big screen is finally graced with the presence of Norfolk’s most infamous son. And good news, it’s a back of the net success. Coogan and co. make nods to big screen action with a Die-Hard-in-a-radio-station plot, but what makes AP: AP fizz is the decision to play it parochial. Norfolk locations, hilarious phone-ins topics (e.g “Norfolk’s most sun-tanned child”) and gags that come as thick n’ fast as Airplane! or Naked Gun make this textbook.

Cert: U

Running time: 98 mins

Year: 2013

The lowdown: Steve Carell’s reformed supervillain returns with minions and triumvirate of cute moppets in tow for a riotous sequel to the surprise 2010 hit.  What plot there is revolves around Gru’s investigation into the theft of an experimental serum that transforms animals (and people, and minions) into ravenous, psychotic (purple-furred) beasties.  But, as with producer Chris Meladandri’s Ice Age series, the story is a mere launch pad for inventive comic skits guaranteed to tickle your inner minion...

The Look of Love

Look of Love posterDirector: Michael Winterbottom

Cast: Steve Coogan, Imogen Poots, Anna Friel, Tamsin Egerton, Chris Addison, James Lance, David Walliams

Cert: 18

Running time: 101 mins

Year: 2013

The lowdown: Paul Raymond, Britain’s most successful smut baron, gets the 24 Hour Party People treatment in Steve Coogan and Michael Winterbottom’s latest collaboration.  Another Coogan creation to cherish, imagine a less likable Alan Partridge and more exposed breasts than a teenage lad’s internet browsing history.  The heady allure and ultimate emptiness of a drug-and-sex-fuelled life is laid bare in a funny, sobering, and fascinating movie, with knockout performances from all involved, particularly Coogan and Anna Friel, Tamsin Egerton and Imogen Poots as the women in Raymond’s life.
