Gareth Evans reveals secrets of The Raid 2: Berandal!

In August this year I had the good fortune of interviewing soon-to-be-white-hot director and all round good bloke Gareth Evans.

I was primarily there to talk about the terrifying segment of V/H/S/2 that he and co-director Timo Tjahjanto were responsible for. But, I couldn’t let the interview go without taking the opportunity to ask him about what we can expect from The Raid 2: Berandal.

Mr. Evans graciously revealed teasers of what we can expect and, to my, joy also confirmed the sequel does feature a car chase!  Something I’d hoped for when writing my review of the original movie.

If like me, waiting for The Raid 2 is like a kid waiting for their first Christmas, then read on and prepare to get rather excited.

Carnival Freakshow Chaos: Gareth Evans On V/H/S/2

VHS2 - Gareth Evans intro at FrightFest 2013For a man who single-handedly re-energised the action genre, Gareth Evans is charmingly self-effacing.

You’d never guess the gregarious, affable 6ft+ Welshman could orchestrate the majestically choreographed mayhem of The Raid, but that’s exactly what he did last year. And reset the action movie bar in the process.

Evans and Tjahjanto’s instalment, Safe Haven, concerns a documentary crew filming a suspicious religious cult led by the mysterious, unnerving Father (Epy Kusnanda). And it happens to be on the day of reckoning, all caught on camera.

We caught up with Evans to discuss his contribution to V/H/S...

The lowdown: Welsh-born writer director Gareth Evans throws down the action gauntlet with this must-see-it-to-believe-it siege drama. Taking the slimmest of stories – a SWAT team heads into a derelict 30 storey Jakarta apartment building that houses the city’s most dangerous criminals – he delivers a non-stop barrage of bullets, broken bones and bloody hell that will leave you reeling, gasping, applauding and cheering. If you’re an action junky, prepare for the ultimate hit.

The full verdict: Director Gareth Evans’ mission statement must have gone something like this: Hard Boiled + Assault on Precinct 13 +Aliens x (Ong Bak + Die Hard) = The Raid.
