The Best Films of 2014

Welcome to the second annual Electric Shadows Top 10.

2014 has been a great year for movies. Here are just a few films that didn’t make our top 10 – Boyhood, 22 Jump Street, Dallas Buyers Club, Under the Skin, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.

Okay, 2014 also witnessed the unnecessary continuation/reboot of the Transformers franchise with Age of Extinction. We would love to say it was unwanted, but with $1bn at the global box office ($33m of that coming from the UK), it’s clear a soulless, mean-spirited THREE HOUR advert for toys, cars and Chinese milk can still earn its place in the world. We’re doomed…

But, with the good outstripping the bad, we’ll claim 2014 as a vintage year...

The lowdown: The breakthrough film for Raid director Gareth Evans, Merantau is a martial arts gem. A showcase for telecom-company-dispatch-driver-turned-action-superstar Iko Uwais and the Pencak Silat fighting style, this riotous adrenalin rush pays affection tribute to old school kung fu cinema. Uwais is perfect as the country boy pitted against gangsters and slave traders, while Evans directs like he’s got the hottest superhero property on the planet. Glorious fun.

Gareth Evans – The Raid 2 FrightFest Q&A

The Raid 2 - Gareth Evans on setAt well over 6ft, Gareth Evans is as big as his movies and a showman-director in the Tarantino mould. So any The Raid 2 Q&A with him won’t be a dry dissection of the work, its subtexts and the process of battling for an artistic vision.

Don’t get us wrong, all these things are in here, but much like with his films Evans wants foremost to entertain and is a natural raconteur with a knack for spinning a great anecdote. And like all great storytellers, he won’t censor his spicy language if the tale demands it.

Following a bring-the-house-down FrightFest screening of The Raid 2 at London’s Cineworld, Haymarket on April 2nd, Evans, plus stars Iko Uwais and Yuyan Ruhian gave the audience a 5-star Q&A recalling making this instant action classic.

And gave us juicy stories about The Raid 3...

The lowdown: The Godfather Pt II of heroic bloodshed movies and surpassing the ballistic brilliance of the first instalment, The Raid 2: Berandal is a five star encore. Iko Uwais returns as beleaguered cop Rama, sent undercover to bust the criminal empire and corrupt police force hinted at in the final moments of the first movie. Yakuza crime movie cool slams headlong into Jacobean revenge tragedy, punctuated by some of the most exhilarating, red raw action ever slammed onto the silver screen. Watch it. Don’t make us tell you twice.

Gareth Evans Talks The Raid 2: Berandal

The Raid 2 Berandal - banner cast poster, Gareth Evans, Hammer Girl

Gareth Evans reveals secrets of The Raid 2: Berandal!

In August this year I had the good fortune of interviewing soon-to-be-white-hot director and all round good bloke Gareth Evans.

I was primarily there to talk about the terrifying segment of V/H/S/2 that he and co-director Timo Tjahjanto were responsible for. But, I couldn’t let the interview go without taking the opportunity to ask him about what we can expect from The Raid 2: Berandal.

Mr. Evans graciously revealed teasers of what we can expect and, to my, joy also confirmed the sequel does feature a car chase!  Something I’d hoped for when writing my review of the original movie.

If like me, waiting for The Raid 2 is like a kid waiting for their first Christmas, then read on and prepare to get rather excited.
