A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night

Girl-Walks-Home-Alone-At-Night---posterDirector: Ana Lily Amirpour

Writer: Ana Lily Amirpour

Cast: Sheila Vand, Arash Marandi, Dominic Rains, Mozhan Marno, Marshall Manesh, Milad Eghbali

Cert: 15

Running time: 101mins

Year: 2014

The lowdown: Striking and seductive vampire tale from debut feature director Ana Lily Amirpour. A mash-up of David Lynch weirdness, Jim Jarmusch monochrome cool and Sergio Leone’s exaggerated framing, it’s bold and inventive in its use of vampirism as a metaphor for female empowerment. Made in the US, but set in Iran and shot in Farsi, as debuts go it recalls the intoxicating weirdness of Rian Johnson’s Brick.

Prince Avalanche

Prince Avalanche - Paul Rudd, Emile Hirsch, quad posterDirector: David Gordon Green

Cast: Paul Rudd, Emile Hirsch

Cert: 15

Running time: 94mins

Year: 2013

The lowdown: Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch renew their ultra-indie credentials with David Gordon Green’s sweet, rambling charmer. Based on the 2011 Icelandic film Either Way, Rudd and Hirsch play two listless guys repainting roadside yellow lines following a California forest fire. Not one for those wanting fast-paced excitement, but breezily pleasant with enough depth to make it worthwhile.

Stuck in Love

SIL quad posterDirector: Josh Boone

Cast: Greg Kinnear, Jennifer Connelly, Lily Collins, Nat Wolff, Logan Lerman, Liana Liberato, Kristen Bell

Cert: 15

Running time: 96mins

Year: 2012

The lowdown: Family isn’t a word, but most definitely a sentence in Josh Boone’s fresh and funny debut drama.  Greg Kinnear plays an acclaimed author pining for ex-wife Jennifer Connelly, who in turn is estranged from their daughter Lily Collins, while Nat Wolff as their son obsesses over a cute classmate and the novels of Stephen King.  Bittersweet and charming in the vein of Crazy Stupid Love, this is well played, wryly observed and surprisingly moving.

The full verdict: Films that open with characters’ inner monologues written onscreen typically fall into a trench of insufferability.
