What’s the story: Radio shock jock Jack Lucas (Bridges) falls into suicidal depression after his on-air remarks spark a tragic incident. He seeks redemption in helping Parry (Williams), a manic homeless man caught up in the event Jack inadvertently caused.

What’s the verdict: A welcome Criterion Collection release of Terry Gilliam’s romantic fairytale that doesn’t forget to add a generous pinch of the Grimm stuff.

Wounded by the difficult production of 1988’s The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, the vagaries of Hollywood saw Gilliam returning three years later to Columbia, the studio that unceremoniously d...

The lowdown: Heartbreaking and intoxicating, Carol is a majestic experience. Cate Blanchett is on Blue Jasmine-level form as Carol and Rooney Mara delivers her best performance to date as Therese, two women who fall for each other in 1950s New York. This threatens a custody battle in which society woman Carol is embroiled and store worker Therese’s relationship with her decent but dull boyfriend. Haynes has total control of the emotions and sumptuous visuals in a film that echoes Wong Kar-wai’s In The Mood For Love. No small praise indeed.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 poster - Andrew GarfieldDirector: Marc Webb

Writers: Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Ocri, Jeff Pinker

Cast: Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan, Sally Field, Denis Leary, Paul Giamatti, BJ Novak, Embeth Davidtz, Campbell Scott

Cert: 12

Running time: 142mins

Year: 2014

The lowdown: Aptly named director Marc Webb spins a sequel superior to his déjà-vu afflicted 2012 reboot. A fresh story, new villain courtesy of Jamie Foxx’s Electro, enhanced action set-pieces and Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone’s chemistry make this reminiscent of Sam Raimi’s original trilogy. Shame that a lurch into ill-advised darker territory scuppers much of the good work, leaving you feeling you’ve been duped into caring about all the brightly coloured motion and emotion.

Cert: 15

Running Time: 104 mins

Year: 2013

The Lowdown: The Coen Brothers hit all the right notes in this heartfelt and occasionally hilarious homage to the 1960’s New York folk scene, which deservedly won the Grand Prix at last years’ Cannes Film Festival. Oscar Isaac shines as the eponymous musician with pitch-perfect back-up from Carey Mulligan, John Goodman, Justin Timberlake and an elusive ginger tomcat. Step inside for a rich, rewarding experience. Aran jumpers are optional.
