The lowdown: Following the first class First Class and the wild The Wolverine, X-Men: Days of Future Past confirms the franchise has rediscovered its X-factor. A time travel save-the-world plot unites the original series with the First Class reboot, delivering a blockbuster to sink your claws, mind and mutant streak into. A high-wattage cast and Bryan Singer’s dynamic direction ensure that in a world of Avengers, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Batman, Superman, etc, etc, X still marks the spot where it all began.

Kick-Ass 2

Kick-Ass 2 - quad poster, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jim Carrey, Chloe Grace Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse Director: Jeff Wadlow

Cast: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jim Carrey, Morris Chestnut, John Leguizamo

Cert: 15

Running time: 103mins

Year: 2013

The lowdown: Back in 2010 Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass hit cinemas and hit them hard.  Dazzling, daring and gloriously irresponsible, it revelled in and spun superhero conventions, adding a shotgun blast of smarts and more than a little heart.  This energetic sequel recaptures the energetic brio of its five-star predecessor, but wayward plotting, character flip-flopping and budget restrictions bring it down a couple of notches.  Yet, in a year when superheroes grew more brooding than ever, it’s good to have a multi-coloured splash of FU hurled at the silver screen.

The Wolverine

Untitled-1Director: James Mangold

Cast: Hugh Jackman, Rila Fukushima, Tao Okamoto, Hal Yamanouchi, Svetlana Khodchenkova, Famke Janssen, Will Yun Lee

Cert: 12A

Running time: 126mins

Year: 2013

The lowdown: The Wolverine is back and this time he’s clawsome! Cinema’s favourite X-Man gets a second stab at his own movie and all involved are determined to make amends for the spectacularly dull, clumsily titled X-Men: Origins – Wolverine. Drawing inspiration from a classic 1980s Japan-set comic series has re-energised the character, and director James Mangold shoots the adventure as a gritty yakuza thriller. Jackman may be on his sixth outing as hirsute grumpy-boots Logan, but attacks the part with claws fully extended. Best superhero film of the summer, and who would have thought that?

Man of Steel

MOS - bannerDirector: Zack Snyder

Cast: Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne

Cert: 12

Running time: 143mins

Year: 2013

The lowdown: Six years after Superman Returns, Bryan Singer’s sort of sequel to the original Superman movies, Batman reviver Christopher Nolan and Watchmen director Zack Snyder deliver the first real Superman reboot.  Going the origins story route that resurrected Batman Begins, Snyder, Nolan and Dark Knight co-writer David S. Goyer retell the legend of the lad from Krypton with the realism and grit now expected from comic book adaptations.  And happily the Bat-method has worked; Man of Steel is big, bold, epic moviemaking, not without flaws great and small but enough to get all suped up about a second instalment...

Iron Man 3

Iron-Man-3-Quad-1835070Director: Shane Black

Cast: Robert Downey, Jr, Guy Pearce, Ben Kingsley, Gwyneth Paltrow, Rebecca Hall, Don Cheadle, James Badge Dale, Paul Bettany, Miguel Ferrer

Cert: 12

Running time: 130 mins

Year: 2013

The lowdown: Robert Downey, Jr dons the red and gold armour for the first time since Avengers Assemble rocked our world. The good news is the iron’s still hot as new director Shane Black takes Tony Stark away from the intergalactic threat of Joss Whedon’s epic into an espionage thriller pitting him against Bin Laden-a-like baddy The Mandarin. Ben Kingsley has bags of fun as the villain, as do Guy Pearce as a twitchy rival genius, Rebecca Hall as an old Stark flame and series regulars Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle...

The lowdown: The most eagerly awaited film of 2012 arrives with an Everest of expectation resting on its caped shoulders. But, with Christopher Nolan again at the helm and series familiars Bale, Oldman, Caine and Freeman joined by hot new blood Tom Hardy, Marion Cotillard and a purr-fect Anne Hathaway, there was no doubt The Dark Knight Rises would deliver the goods. And it does so in awesome and ambitious style, mixing blockbuster spectacle with a gripping story that weaves in the Occupy Movement, banker bashing and the War on Terror...
