Writer: Gregory Burke

Cast: Rosamund Pike, Daniel Brühl, Eddie Marsan, Lior Ashkenazi, Denis Ménochet, Nonso Anozie

Cert: 15

Running time: 107mins

Year: 2018

What’s the story: In 1976 four anti-Israel terrorists hijack an Air France plane. Over seven days they hold the hostages at Uganda’s Entebbe airport, under the eye of tyrant Idi Amin. The Israeli government debates whether to take offensive action.

What’s the verdict: Director José Padilha helmed the Brazilian drug cartel movie Elite Squad and its impressive sequel. He oversees the similarly hard-hitting series Narcos (for sake of argument we’ll ignore that ill-advised 2014 RoboCop remake).

Padilha directs with the immediacy he brought to the documentary Bus 174, his searing debut and a true Fi...

Sorcerer – William Friedkin’s zero hour contract masterpiece

When discussing Blade Runner, Ridley Scott said, “It’s as bad to be ahead of your time as behind it.”

Director William Friedkin can sympathise with this.

In the early 1970s he was a filmmaker in synch with the mood of the nation. He revitalised the cop thriller with The French Connection in 1971, nabbing Best Director and Best Film among a five Oscar haul.

Two years later he reinvented horror cinema for the modern age with The Exorcist.

Then, in 1977 he delivered to American audiences Sorcerer, a film fundamentally at odds with a country aching to slough off a decade of uncertainty and corruption.

A loose remake of Henri-Georges Clouzot’s 1953 thriller The Wages of Fear and Georges Arnaud’s same-name source novel, Friedkin’s movie was too bleak for a nation hungry for the escapist th...

What’s the verdict: Drone warfare and terrorist insurgency were touched upon in director Gavin Hood’s previous film, the underrated Ender’s Game and take centre stage in Eye in the Sky.

Helen Mirren impresses as the steel-nerved Colonel Powell (a role originally intended for a man) whose long hunt for the terrorists (including a radicalised British national) seems to have borne fruit...

No Escape (2015)

No-Escape---posterDirector: John Erick Dowdle

Writer: John Erick Dowdle, Drew Dowdle

Cast: Owen Wilson, Lake Bell, Pierce Brosnan

Cert: 15

Running time: 103mins

Year: 2015

The lowdown: Gripping thriller with Owen Wilson as an engineer relocating his family to the Far East. But, on the second day in their swanky hotel rebel insurgents overthrow the government and declare war on foreign nationals, meaning the Americans must make a break for the border. Simplistic, but with more political commentary than say American Sniper, and featuring ex-Bond Pierce Brosnan in solid support, this has moments of nerve-shredding tension, with a rooftop set-piece likely to appear on scenes of the year lists.

The full verdict: Sadly all-too-topical after the ISIL beachfront massacre of Western tourists in Tunisia, No Escap...
