What’s the story: With the First Order hunting the Resistance into extinction, Rey (Ridley) seeks out Luke Skywalker (Hamill) to bring him into the fight.

What’s the verdict: Of the new wave of adventures set in a galaxy far, far away, The Last Jedi has the toughest mission to date. To do something different.

The Force Awakens and Rogue One recaptured the magic. Partly by leaning heavily into the nostalgia, mixing the new with the comfortingly familiar.

2017 – A Hot Summer for Movies?

Summer movies. They promise so much, yet so many times deliver so little. Terminator: Genisys, Jason Bourne, Suicide Squad anyone?

What’s the verdict: Proof that a chase movie coupled with genuine emotion and well-drawn characters can steady even the wobbliest premise, Midnight Special is the most enjoyable film that essentially makes no sense you’ll see this year.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Trailer Reaction

Star Wars trailer reaction - X-wing fighters

Back in 2001 a Star Wars: Episode II trailer momentarily set the still infant internet ablaze. Here was a Star Wars trailer that promised The Phantom Menace was merely a misstep. It had drama, excitement; an awareness of what made Star Wars great. It had Gabriel Byrne looking conflicted, it had a squad of Boba Fetts, it had Christopher Walken with Man Who Fell To Earth eyes.

It of course wasn’t real. That mock trailer now seems very quaint and our gullibility part ignorance of what fans were doing out there in cyberspace and part willingness to believe that the next Star Wars instalment was going to be good.

Jump thirteen years. On Friday 28th November 2014, something rather special happened...

Tracks (2013)

Tracks posterDirector: John Curran

Writer: Marion Nelson

Cast: Mia Wasikowska, Adam Driver

Cert: 12

Running time: 112mins

Year: 2013

The lowdown: Robyn Davidson’s epic 1,700 mile 9 month trek across Australia arrives after decades languishing in the outback of Development Hell. Mia Wasikowksa is impressively prickly and enigmatic as Davidson, ably assisted by spirited camels and a faithful dog. John Curran plots the film along a traditional wilderness adventure path, but this is a journey worth taking.

Tracks - Wasikowska, camelTracks: Mia Wasikowska as Robyn Davidson and Adam Driver as Rick Smolan

The full verdict: Walking the Australian Outback with only a dog and a quartet of camels would seemingly give any right minded person the hump.

But, Robyn Davidson did just this, became a global sensation and penned a bestseller based on her exploits.

The Painted Veil director John Curran, succee...
