So Rob W lets Rob D know about all the good stuff he has been missing. Rob D bravely listens without sounding too despondent.

Our intrepid casters in pod then tackle a brace of disappointing Netflix sigh-fi efforts: Mute and The Cloverfield Paradox...

The lowdown: Sober and compassionate telling of a true life case of police brutality in California’s Bay Area, when a train station altercation turned deadly after strong arm tactics and racial tensions collided. Michael B. Jordan delivers a commanding performance as Oscar Grant III, a 22 year old ex-con living out the final day of 2008, unaware of what a New Year’s night out will bring. Oscar winner Octavia Spencer provides excellent back-up as Grant’s mother.

The lowdown: A cast to kill for flesh out this taut thriller from the director of Crazy Heart. Christian Bale is a buttoned down steel worker suddenly faced with the rotten side of life when Iraq veteran brother Casey Affleck finds himself in deep with the wrong crowd. Woody Harrelson intimidates both characters and the audience as an Appalachian crime boss spat out of the darkest corner of a mountain, while Willem Dafoe, Forest Whitaker and Zoe Saldana offer first rate support. Bruising, melancholy, but memorable.
