Reservoir Dogs at 25 – The Electric Shadows Podcast

For this special Reservoir Dogs 25th Anniversary episode, Robs Daniel & Wallis are joined once more by Ian Bird. You’ll remember Ian from his wise words on the JFK podcast. Together they dissect Quentin Tarantino’s sensational debut, discussing its strengths, characters, themes and controversial use of language. And that whole Who Shot Nice Guy Eddie thing.

The three intrepid podcasters place the movie in the overall picture of Tarantino’s career and discuss Tarantino’s cinematic legacy. Could there be a case for the Marvel Cinematic Universe being an extension of what Quentin was doing with his movies in the 90s and noughties? Or Joss Whedon taking the QT baton and running with it into fantasy realms rather than crime? These thoughts and more are given their day in court…

The Best Films of 2016

The-Witch---family-gathering

Oh 2016, you terrible year. What general miserableness was foisted upon us these past 12 months. Providing a light in the gloom were movies released this year; a great selection from which it was difficult to draw a top 10. But, we managed it and proudly present what we regard as the year’s best releases.

Before we get to that list, firstly a shout-out to those films that skirted the Top 10 but which didn’t make it in.  Ironically, we couldn’t find room for Room, Green Room, or The Keeping RoomCaptain America: Civil War was the only summer blockbuster worth bothering with, but again didn’t make the grade. Elvis & Nixon, The Nice Guys, Bone Tomahawk, The Hateful Eight, Creed. We salute you, but there were still 10 movies we placed above them.

Here they are – in reverse order as is cus...

Mid-Year Movie Rundown – The Electric Shadows Podcast

We’re almost at the end of June, so what better time to take stock of 2016 in film. And forgive us for saying so, but we believe this is a bumper year for movies. The Witch, Creed, The Hateful Eight, Room, Spotlight, The Big Short, Captain America: Civil War, Green Room, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Bone Tomahawk, When Marnie Was There. A good Top 10 of the year could be made from the first 6 months.

So, join Rob Daniel & Rob Wallis as the go boldly through The Good, The Bad and The Middling of 2016 so far.  And note this was recorded before the tragic death of Anton Yelchin, which is why our Green Room discussion refers to him in the present tense. RIP Anton.

The Electric Shadows Podcast – The Winter of the Western

The-Hateful-Eight-slider

Welcome to the first episode of The Electric Shadows Podcast. Technically, this was the second recorded, but the first to be posted. We’re going all Episode IV: A New Hope on this.

Currently the podcast is myself and Rob Wallis, editor of Of All The Film Blogs. In this episode we look at the Winter of the Western. Such are the coincidences of release schedules that 2016 has opened with three unusual, interesting westerns. The Revenant, The Hateful Eight and Bone Tomahawk, the latter out on Friday 19th February. All different from one another, all of meaty durations, and all using the classic genre in interesting ways.

The podcast is rough around the edges, with such niceties as music and effects to be incorporated into future installments (when I get the hang of the editing software).

But...

What’s the verdict: The Western sure is one versatile genre, and Kurt Russell a versatile actor within it.

Hot off the back of The Hateful Eight (in the UK at least), he’s back with another expansive, violent oater. But, where Tarantino’s movie revelled in pomp and theatricality, writer/director S...
